Self-Care Throughout a Crisis

Self- care can seem like the last thing on your mind right now with everything going on. In fact, top of mind for some of you may be worry, fear, uncertainty, depression, anxiety, despair, or any other number of emotions that teeter on the "darker" side. I don't blame you because I feel that way too sometimes. I often wonder where we all, as a society, go from here. Almost none of us have experienced anything like this before and no one really has definitive answers on just how many people this will effect, when it will end, or what the future holds. It is impossible to know the outcome of all of this but what we can control is our day to day and how well we can get ourselves through this pandemic.

By all means, use this time to workout, eat right and get fit or eat as many snacks as your heart desires while cruising through everything Netflix has to offer. There is no judgement here. But what I will suggest is carving out a little bit of time in your day for self-care. What I mean by that is taking some time to do something that makes you feel good, something you love to do and something that gives you a sense of normalcy throughout all of the chaos around us. 

While self-care looks very different for each of us, here are some of my favs: 

  • Hot bath with essential oils and epsom salt
  • Face Mask
  • Facial 
  • Hot cup of coffee or tea
  • Reading a good book
  • Watching a romantic comedy
  • Cooking a meal from scratch
  • Snuggling my pup
  • Painting my nails
  • Painting
  • Drawing 
  • Colouring
  • Planting a new plant into a cool pot 
  • Journalling
  • Meditating 
  • Learning something new
  • Laughing
  • Talking to family or friends 

Honestly the list could go on and on. Learning to find joy in the simplest moments and then using those moments to promote self-care are how you are going to get through this. Or it is one way, anyway.

Check in with yourself and figure out what it is that you really need at the moment. Is it a small act that will lift your spirits, or is it that you need to seek online counselling? Can a friend or family member support you through Facetime? Can spending time away from the internet for a little while be your saving grace?

Honour yourself, your feelings, and where you are in all of the "noise" of society. Practice moments of self-care whenever possible and reaffirm yourself that this too shall pass.
